Overview
The aim of the Company’s long term strategy is to enter into the processing and refining of nickel ore to create products with added value, such as Ferro Nickel (FeNI). This is in line with the mandate in the Law No. 4 on Minerals and Coal issued by the Government in 2009.
To realize the plan, the company through its subsidiaries, PT COR Industri Indonesia, has built a nickel refining facilities (smelter) located in North Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi. In completing the construction of this project, the company has cooperated with Macrolink group, from china, as a strategic partner.
The smelter will employ the blast furnace technology and stated to produce 300,000 tons of FeNi per year, with a minimum nickel content of 8%. The construction which was originally planned in three phases is shortened into two phases:
- The first phase is in 2017 with capacity of 100,000 tons FeNi per year using Blast Furnace technology.
- The second phase will begin in 2025 with capacity of 200,000 tons FeNi per year using Electric Furnace technology.
Nickel Ore which will be processed is comes from IUP area PT Mulia Pacific Resources and PT Itamatra Nusantara in North Morowali, and PT Bumi Konawe Utara in North Konawe.
Since 2018, the first phase of the smelter development is undertaken by PT COR Industri Indonesia, has been operating and its products are exported to the user's country.
In addition, a second-phase smelter project that has a larger capacity will require an investment of USD 500 million.
